A crash in the whoops during SX1 practice significantly impacted Matt Moss’s night at the WSX Australian Grand Prix, with the Venum BUD Racing Kawasaki rider later declaring that it was ‘not the night’ he wanted at his home round.

Entering the weekend with momentum after a convincing P4 result in Melbourne’s AUSX Open – equal on points with third-placed Hunter Lawrence – the 37-year-old was aiming to carry that form into the Gold Coast.

An incident in practice with Quad Lock Honda’s Joey Savatgy at the end of the whoops sent Moss over the bars, however, with that heavy impact affecting him for the remainder of the night as he later went down again in the opening SX1 sprint.

“I don’t want to say it was Savatgy’s fault or anything, but he was rolling through the whoops on the left side and started to veer right while I was skimming,” Moss told MotoOnline. “I came together with him, and then ended up going over the bars really badly.

I hit my back, my neck, and my head. I was a bit dizzy. I tried to ride and then had another crash because of my head knock – actually, I wouldn’t even call it a head knock – but yeah, just not my night.

“[The second crash] I was sliding pretty good on the plywood, then I gripped up on the fake grass, which threw me straight down. So, not the night I wanted, but I’ve got India next weekend, then the last [WSX] round in South Africa, and then India again, so three more rounds of racing that I get to do, and we’ll try to finish on a high.”

It’s been a turbulent campaign for the nine-time Australian champion, with crashes and injuries balanced by highlights such as his victory at the Indian Supercross Racing League (ISRL) season-opener in Pune, with further racing still ahead to round out 2025.

“I’m sore,” he continued. “I have been nursing injuries all year – from the start of the year with my big crash, where my shock blew on the up-ramp of a quad. That one hurt, and every time I start getting good, I’ll have a little mistake or crash… it’s been a tough, tough year. Three more rounds to turn it around, and then off to Germany for Dortmund [in January].

“We’ll then see [about 2026]. I’m actually in the works of trying to do a bit of motocross next year – stay fitter instead of sitting in the posi, while also doing a bit of coaching. I think that it’ll happen – my own program – but just putting things together at the moment.”

Moss is scheduled to contest round two of the ISRL this weekend in Hyderabad, which will rule him out of Saturday’s Swedish GP. He’ll return to WSX for the season finale in South Africa, while fellow Australian Luke Clout has also been linked to an 11th-hour SX1 opportunity with the BUD Racing Kawasaki team across the final two rounds of the world championship.
