A standout ride at last weekend’s AUSX Open has legendary Australian Matt Moss entering this Saturday’s WSX Australian GP on the Gold Coast with momentum on his side, as the 37-year-old shifts his focus toward enjoying racing in the latter stages of his career.

Moss made his first AUSX Supercross start of the year at Melbourne’s fourth round, delivering an exceptional performance with 3-4 finishes for fourth overall in SX1 –tied on points with Hunter Lawrence.

The ever-competitive New South Wales journeyman expressed that ‘letting go’ of expectation and instead enjoying the moment led to what was one of his best rides of late, and he is going to continue that in Queensland.

“I just had a smile on my face hanging out with my mate Dylan Wills, and I really enjoyed last weekend,” Moss told MotoOnline. “We sat down at dinner and had a conversation about just letting go a little bit and enjoying the moment of where we are in our careers and all that sort of stuff.

“I feel like the whole weekend translated into that, and I feel like maybe I just need to take that same sort of approach coming into the WSX – just enjoy what I have left to give, enjoy the racing.”

Having returned to full-time racing in 2021 with a renewed focus on title success, Moss acknowledged that the pressure he placed on himself may have limited his ability to enjoy the moment – something he now recognises can influence the result.

“I’m flying from different country to country and just not putting so much expectation on… you know, I don’t know,” he continued. “I feel like I’m a 37-year-old stuck in my 26-year-old mentality – I just want to go out and win. And I want to, but I’ve got to sit back and enjoy it a little bit more, have a smile on my face. When I’m happy, I tend to ride well.

“I’ve done a bit of riding with [Haiden] Deegan this week, so yeah – I’m just lucky. Who gets to do that? Lucky that I raced Jett and Hunter last weekend, and then riding and training with Haiden during the week.”

Moss sits 13th in the World Supercross SX1 standings with the Venum BUD Racing Kawasaki team, having claimed ninth overall at the Argentina season-opener, before being sidelined in Canada with an existing injury.
