Late-race collision in the second SX2 final at Redcliffe.
A broken wrist sustained at round one of the Boost Mobile AUSX Supercross Championship on Saturday night will keep Reid Taylor sidelined for Redcliffe 2 today, with scheduled surgery casting doubt over the remainder of his SX2 campaign.
The 21-year-old was recently named to the Todd Waters-led Raceline Husqvarna Tdub Racing program after returning from a stint in the United States, with anticipation high as he entered supercross in form.
After qualifying seventh, Taylor won the LCQ to earn a place in the two-final format, charging to an impressive P4 ride in the opening encounter. A fast start in the second final had him in P3 until the closing stages, where contact with Lux Turner resulted in him going down and breaking his wrist.
“Reid was riding well – round one is always a bit chaotic with the nerves and stuff like that,” Waters told MotoOnline. “The bike is working, he makes it look super-fast, and it’s working well. He went on to win the LCQ and then finished P4 in the first final, which was solid.
“The next race was also really good. He was in third with one lap to go, and a rider came across on him in the whoops and took him down, and unfortunately, broke his wrist. We’re super=bummed for him – we’ve all been putting in the work, he’s really comfortable on the bike, and he had the pace.
“He had one lap to go and he was on the podium, so it’s gut-wrenching for us, but mostly for him – we’re devastated for him. I’m organising Dr. Steven Andrews, who is the best upper-limb surgeon in Australia, so we’ll get Reid looked after and see where we can take it leading into next year.”
The team endured a challenging night of racing at the opening round, with young SX2 rider Travis Olander – also coming off a pre-season wrist injury himself – damaging his clutch lever and withdrawing from the first final. He rebounded for P13 in race two, earning 18th overall for the opener.
