Multi time MX2 champion continues to build back to peak form.
A second moto victory in MX1 at Toowoomba on Sunday was another timely milestone for Honda Racing’s Wilson Todd, who continues to build back towards his proper form after successfully overcoming a string of injuries.
That well-documented run of setbacks has finally begun to swing in the opposite direction for the Queenslander, as an overall podium at round six in Canberra was met by topping the opening qualifying session at Toowoomba, as well as posting a moto win in race two.
Todd’s 4-1 scorecard across the Echo Valley race day was enough for him to claim third overall – two points from P1’s Kyle Webster (Boost Mobile Honda) – as he continues to resume his front-running MX1 form.
“I thought today was pretty good,” Todd told MotoOnline. “I was good during the morning’s qualifying [session], we were fastest in that, then, yeah, I got a terrible start in race one – I was covered in mud, so I had to make my way through there.
“Better start in race two, I passed a few of the boys, then I just cruised around in a comfy spot, not riding over my head or anything. I knew they were right behind me, but I was happy with how that one finished.”
Entering the opening round of Penrite ProMX not knowing how much pressure he could place on his foot and targeting a ‘slow burn’, the developments of both speed and comfort have been increasing, which is having an impact across each area of his riding.
“We’ve been getting better slowly – even at the practice track, I feel stronger, and overall I feel fit and strong, he continued. “But today, I was just racing at a comfortable pace. I saw the two riders in the lead coming back to me [in race two], and I knew that I would be able to get around them.
“We’ll try to go a bit better again next weekend – a bit better than a third [overall], and I think we’ll be happy.”
With his recent results, Todd maintains fourth in the overall MX1 standings, 40 markers from both Nathan Crawford (KTM Racing Team) and the absent previous championship leader, Jed Beaton (Monster Energy CDR Yamaha).
