An appearance by Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart at this weekend’s San Diego round of the 2016 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship is in question following a hard fall during the Anaheim 1 450SX main event.

In just his first race back from a lengthy suspension, the former champion was taken down by defending champion Ryan Dungey, causing Stewart to lose consciousness as a result of the crash.

Due to Stewart’s crash the 450SX main event was red flagged while he was being attended to by the Asterisk Medical Crew and he was unable to rejoin the race for the restart.

It’s a tough blow for Stewart, the Yoshimura Suzuki Team and team manager Mike Webb, who feels everything was going exactly to plan on return to racing.

“James came in ready to race, everything was going to plan, maybe even better than we expected,” said Webb. “He was strong in timed qualifying, went out and qualified directly into the main from his heat race.

“He had a great start in the final and then out of nowhere he ends up on the ground due to no fault of his own. It’s a real shame for all the work he put into this comeback, but I’m hopeful he’ll be able to bounce back soon and quickly put this behind him.”
