Red Bull KTM world champions Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings were victorious in Valkenswaard’s sixth MXGP World Championship round of the season in The Netherlands on Sunday, extending their respective MXGP and MX2 series leads.

Cairoli finished third in the opening MXGP moto won by Gautier Paulin (Monster Energy Kawasaki), before bouncing back to take the second moto win and securing the overall in the process.

Meanwhile, Paulin’s run of fine form came to an abrupt halt when he went down in moto two, sustaining a suspected broken collarbone and thumb in the incident. He was still credited eighth overall.

Completing the overall podium behind Cairoli was Jeremy Van Horebook (Yamaha) with 2-3 finishes and Kevin Strijbos (Rockstar Energy Suzuki), who scored 6-2 for the round.

In MX2 it was Herlings the class of the field at his home round, streaking to a clean-sweep from Husqvarna’s Romain Febvre and KTM’s Jordi Tixier. Australian champion Luke Styke (KEMEA Yamaha) was 19th overall with 17-18 finishes.

The Women’s championship returned to action at Valkenswaard and it was Australian Meghan Rutledge who rode her Kawasaki to the overall by virtue of a pair of second places. Rounding out the podium was series leader Chiara Fontanesi and Natalie Kane.

The MXGP series will continue on 10-11 May at Talavera de la Reina in Spain.
