Current Australian Supercross number two Daniel McCoy refuses to rule out his title prospects ahead of this weekend’s Mount Gambier round of the 2013 championship.

After finishing runner-up for CDR Yamaha last year, McCoy entered the new year with Motorex KTM as a clear title contender, however 6-5 results in Darwin have him currently sixth in the standings and 19 points behind leader Matt Moss.

McCoy, 29, will be targeting wins in an effort to reduce that margin to Moss, hoping for more technical and traditional supercross-style tracks to complete the season.

“I definitely need to get some good points on the board this weekend,” McCoy commented. “I want to win this championship and to do that I need to get wins. There’s a lot to be done in order to achieve that, so we’ll just make it happen step by step.

“There’s nothing too different in my set-up, so it’ll just be a matter of getting the laps in. It’s unusual to be here racing supercross – usually we’re here racing motocross.

“I don’t mind it here, but to be honest I don’t really take the surrounds in very much, I’m here to do one thing and that’s race.”

Team manager Rob Twyerould is also confident that McCoy can bounce back from his Darwin results. Both McCoy and teammate Kirk Gibbs have taken advantage of the month-long layoff to cement the settings on their 450 SX-Fs.

“Daniel is going really well and being based in Sydney we’ve been seeing a lot more of him lately,” Twyerould said. “He’s on target with his training and he’s been riding well. I’m looking forward to a pretty solid race from Dan this weekend.

“What we learned in Darwin has reinforced our setting and both the boys are happy with it. The result there wasn’t a great way to start the championship and it’s only a short season in which to come from behind, but both boys are quite competitive and I think it will be a bit of a mixed bag – I think we’ll be very competitive.”
