Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s Matt Moss and Motorex KTM’s Todd Waters are gearing up for one final head-to-head scrap for the title of 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals MX1 champion.

It’s fitting that season the season finale at Coolum this weekend should see a down-to-the-wire race between the category’s dominant riders, with Moss and Waters claiming all but two of the nine rounds contested to date between them.

Last weekend’s Toowoomba win could prove telling for Moss. He battled a bout of the flu and felt off colour, but still managed to take 71 points, stretching his advantage over Waters to 25 points.

The 25-year-old says he won’t back off at Coolum, and will maintain the same approach he has taken to every round of racing.

“I just need to keep doing what I’m doing heading into Coolum, not try anything fancy,” said Moss.

“We can’t go there to finish fifth, we need to keep charging because otherwise that’s when things go wrong. We’ll just let it play out and be there at the end.”

Waters is pleased with his own forwards progress and feels his own confidence is building round by round.

Consistency and a level-head has kept the KTM pilot well in check with Moss, despite his season hitting a stumbling block due to injury early on.

“I’m looking forward to racing at Coolum again this weekend and feeling confident,” said Waters.

“It’s been great to be feeling better and see myself getting faster each week. I’m still moving forward and that’s what it’s all about coming into this race.”

The 2012 MX1 class runner-up concedes that Moss’ results will ultimately dictate the end result, and aims to ride the best he can to stay in the hunt.

“The championship is not something I can control at this point, so I’ll focus on riding the best I can, and whatever that brings, it brings,” added Waters.

A maximum of 70 points is up for grabs over the two 30-minute motos at Coolum on Sunday, with a further 5 points on the line in GoPro Super Pole.
