Motorex KTM has officially confirmed that Daniel McCoy will join Kirk Gibbs for the upcoming 2013 Australian Supercross Championship.

McCoy initially indicated the move with a series of social media posts at the end of July, however the deal was formalised just last week following a successful pre-season testing campaign aboard the factory-supported 450 SX-F.

Team regular Todd Waters will depart for Europe next week in a special visit to the final round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in the Netherlands, before focusing on representing Team Australia at the Motocross of Nations on 29 September.

“Danny had a couple of options for Supercross and with Todd riding the MXoN it freed up the resources for a relationship with him,” Twyerould said. “Over the years he’s done very well and in testing he’s looked very smooth and in control and really gelled with the bike so we’re looking forward to a fruitful relationship.

“He hasn’t ridden a KTM in a while but he loves this current one for the way it turns and handles. He rang me after he got it and said ‘is this thing standard? Because it’s unreal!’

“For us, we like his dogged determination and the fact that nothing fazes him. He’s probably got an advantage too in that while everyone else has been fighting the motocross championship he’s been concentrating on supercross so we’re hoping for a good result.”

McCoy is anticipating a successful return to the Austrian brand, impressed with the progression of the 450 SX-F since he last competed aboard one in 2010.

“I’m super excited,” McCoy said. “In my 11 years as a pro this will be my fifth year on a KTM and the new bike is unreal. I’ve done 16 hours on the bike on a supercross track already and I’m feeling more and more confident. We’ve tested well and got our suspension ballpark setting.

“My whole career I’ve had ups and downs like anyone, so to get the support from KTM is fantastic. I was attracted to everything about the team – the guys, the bike, how professional they are and how bad they want to win.

“After coming second last year and racing in America this year I’m definitely more confident and hungrier than ever to get a championship. I’m itching to race. I’ve still got three weeks to wait and I’m actually counting the days!”

It was also recently confirmed that Brenden Harrison will contest the series for Choice Motorsports KTM in the Lites class aboard a 250 SX (click here for details).

The 2013 Australian Supercross season will commence at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway on 14-15 September.
