Runaway FIM World Motocross Championship MX2 points leader Jeffrey Herlings is in line to wrap up his second consecutive title if his winning ways continue at Loket in the Czech Republic this weekend.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider heads to this weekend’s grand prix with a significant lead after putting together an unbeaten run of 13 victories within the class since the season opener in Qatar.

Herlings rides to the 14th grand prix of the season with a 159 point leader over teammate Jordi Tixier, and is confident that his current form will allow him to wrap up the championship and in turn, become the most successful Dutch rider to ever compete in the sport.

“Every GP I’ve extended my points lead by a big gap, so hopefully I can finish [the championship] in Loket,” Herlings told MXLarge.com.

“There are still three GPs to go and winning a championship at the beginning of August would really be something special.

“I want to keep on winning, and keep going in this good direction and getting record after record. That will be fun. I’m really enjoying it.”

Should, or when, he wraps up the title, a recent change to the regulations will mean Herlings is not forced to move to the MX1 class, as previously required.

Herlings supported the decision, after earlier indicating that he would leave the World Championship to pursue a ride in the United States if he was pushed from the MX2 class.

“When you get a championship so early you should not have to move up to MX1 at such a young age,” he said. “I’m happy and thankful they changed that rule.

“I was serious [on the move to America]. If they didn’t change it, I would, but now they have it is completely out of the picture.”

Even if he wins the MX2 title in Loket, Herlings has indicated he will push onto attempt to win all of the remaining grands prix on the 2013 calendar.
