Runaway MX1 and MX2 class leaders Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings scored significant wins for the KTM brand on home soil in Sunday’s thirteenth round of the FIM World Motocross Championship, the Grand Prix of Germany.

The Eurospeedway of Lausitzring, near Berlin, attracted over 16,000 spectators to the first ever GP staged at the Circus Maximus.

The factory Red Bull KTM of Cairoli came to Germany as the one to beat and, despite a concerted challenge from Clement Desalle, the Italian rider would again emerge victorious.

Cairoli and Desalle mirrored one anothers’ results across the two races, with Cairoli getting the nod over the French rider by virtue of a higher finish in the second moto.

Desalle was a clear winner in the opening moto, with Cairoli admitting he struggled to find his rhythm. He bounced back in the second, making the most of some mistakes from Desalle to take the win.

4-3 results to fellow Red Bull KTM rider Ken de Dycker handed him the third step on the podium, with CLS Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Tommy Searle on equal points but displaced due to de Dycker’s more favourable run in the second race.

Kevin Strijbos’ 5-5 results saw him finish fifth for the GP, followed by David Philippaerts (sixth), Joel Roelants (seventh), Jeremy van Horebeek (eighth), Milko Potisek (ninth) and Matiss Karro (10th).

Following the season’s 13th Grand Prix Cairoli has a 108-point lead over Desalle, who moves to second ahead of de Dycker.

MX2 class spoils again belonged to Herlings, with the KTM-mounted man from the Netherlands enjoying a perfect 1-1 result to further add to his massive points lead.

Though he missed the holeshot, Herlings made light work of moving back into the lead and controlled the pace to his liking, with the rare opportunity to wrap up the world title with three rounds remaining following the next GP in the Czech Republic.

Positions two through four were carbon copies across both races, with Herlings’ teammate Jordi Tixier taking two second places, while Glen Coldenhoff made it an all-KTM top three with third places in both motos.

Australia’s Dean Ferris proved to be the hard-luck story of the MX2 class. Ferris was running second in the opening race before crashing and recovering for ninth.

Ferris found himself buried beyond the top 10 in the final race but fought his way back for fifth, claiming sixth overall for the GP.

After 13 grands prix it is Herlings with an almost-unassailable 152-point advantage over Tixier, with Spanish rider Jose Butron third.

Despite his early injury setbacks, Ferris still holds down sixth in the MX2 class and is well within reach of a finish in the competitive class’ top three ranks.

Round 14 of the FIM World Motocross Championship will be held at the Loket track in the Czech Republic.
