Australian Motocross Championship leader Todd Waters has confirmed that a position in Team Australia for the 2013 FIM Motocross of Nations holds priority for him over the Australian Supercross Championship.

The MXoN will be staged in Germany on 29 September, which is four weeks following Coolum’s final round of the Monster Energy MX Nationals. However, rounds one and two of Supercross are scheduled for Darwin directly in between those dates on 14-15 September.

With aspirations to compete in Europe full time, potentially as soon as next year, the Motorex KTM team rider is hoping he gets selected for Team Australia – a move that could force him to forfeit the opening SX rounds.

“If I got selected to ride the Motocross of Nations I would definitely give it preference over the first two rounds of the Australian Supercross Championship in Darwin, as they fall at a very similar time,” Waters told MotoOnline.com.au.

Waters was initially scheduled to contest two grands prix earlier in 2013 before he suffered a string of injuries, however both he and KTM Australia continue to work toward the common goal of having him compete in Europe full time.

“My goal is to race in Europe and we’re trying to sort something out for after the MX Nationals,” he added. “Nothing is set in stone at the moment, we’re still talking, but there are some big things happening that could involve quite a long period of time. I can’t say any more than that!”

With Waters a favourite for a seat on Team Australia when Motorcycling Australia officials select the team in the coming weeks, sources have most recently linked current national number two Daniel McCoy to the vacant 450 SX-F in Australian Supercross.

Waters made his MXoN debut in 2012 alongside a youthful team of Luke Styke and Lawson Bopping, claiming 10th overall at Lommel in Belgium.

Meanwhile, Waters’ domestic arch-rival Matt Moss, currently second in the MX Nationals and just four points in arrears of Waters, has declared he won’t be applying for MXoN selection.

Instead Moss will opt to focus on Supercross, a series he’ll enter as a title favourite when it commences in September (click here for complete story).
