Victorian rider Kale Makeham put together the ride of his young career at Appin’s sixth round of the Monster Energy MX Nationals, winning his first professional moto victory in the MX2 category.

The privateer contender, aboard his Tunetech Racing KTM 250 SX, took his first-ever moto win and became the first 250cc two-stroke rider to win a moto in the four-stroke dominated class.

Makeham kicked off his day with a strong third place qualifying position before taking the early lead in moto one and running away with a strong first place finish, a dream come true for the rookie.

“I had an awesome day today,” Makeham told MotoOnline.com.au. “I came out and qualified third which was good. Then I was so pumped because I got the holeshot and managed to get my first moto win.

“It’s pretty much a dream come true for me, nobody really expected it and we worked hard for it, so that was cool.”

With a bad start in moto two Makeham pushed his way back to third which earned him a second overall on the day, his season-best finish.

“I had a terrible start in the second moto and I managed to fight back to third,” he explained. “That was good enough for second on the day and we now sit second in the championship.”

Following the long six-week mid-season break, Makeham is happy with his performance to kick start the second half of the 2013 outdoor season.

“I’m really happy with that, it was a really positive day especially after the six-week break when everybody’s sort of getting their groove back,” he added. “It was cool to come out and put in a solid day’s effort.”

With both Serco Yamaha’s Luke Clout and Carlton Dry Honda Racing’s Josh Cachia out of the series injured, Makeham now sits second overall in points, 83 points behind leader Luke Styke.
