Cairoli and Herlings win in Finland, Ferris second overall

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli took a convincing overall MX1 win at the 12th round of the FIM Motocross World Championships in Finland.

The defending MX2 world champion used a pair of first place finishes to earn his 62nd overall GP win at the historic Hyvinkaa circuit.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle lead part of the first moto before taking the runner-up spot to Cairoli. In moto two the Belgium rider was third, giving him second overall on the day with 2-3 scores.

Third overall on the day was Desalle’s teammate Kevin Strijbos. The Belgian rider battle arm-pump in moto one, but rebounded in moto two with a solid second earning himself the final podium spot with a 5-2 score.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Ken De Dycker finished fourth overall in the premier class with a 3-6 score followed by Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Van Horebeek to round out the top five.

Cairioli continues to lead the MX1 world championship standings by 99 points over Gautier Paulin, Desalle, De Dycker and Strijbos.

In the hotly-contested MX2 class it was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who once again dominated the field of riders.

The Dutch rider pulled away from the field in both motos to secure the overall win with a perfect 1-1 moto scorecard, he now sits on par with GP legend Stefan Everts with 12 GP wins.

Second overall in the MX2 class was Australia’s Dean Ferris. The Monster Energy Yamaha rider used a pair of third place finishes to land himself the solid runner-up finish.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordi Tixier was third overall on the day with a 5-2 result. Tixier crash in moto one before rebounding to take a strong runner-up moto finish.

Rounding out the MX2 top five was Silver Action KTM’s Jose Butron in fourth and JTECH ESTA Motorsports Racing Honda’s Aleksandr Tonkov in fifth.

Herlings incrased his world championship lead to 151 points over teammate Tixier, Butron sits third followed by Christophe Charlier and Glenn Coldenhoff. Australia’s Ferris holds down sixth overall in the championship chase.

The 2013 FIM Motocross World Championship heads to Germany on 28 July for the 13th round of the series.
