Cairoli and Herlings sweep Latvian Grand Prix for KTM

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Antonio Cairoli took the overall MX1 win at Kegums in Latvia for round 11 of the 2013 FIM Motocross World Championship.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli took the overall MX1 win at Kegums in Latvia for round 11 of the 2013 FIM Motocross World Championship.

In moto one of the MX1 class it was Cairoli’s Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate Ken de Dycker who took the lead early and ran away with the win.

Carrying a nagging knee injury the defending series champion, rode smart and took a second place finish ahead of Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle.

Rounding out the top five for moto one was Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Van Horebeek and teammate Gautier Paulin in fourth and fifth spots respectively.

In the second mot Cairoli started up front and put on a dominate the performance from start to finish. Finish second in moto two was his teammate De Dycker.

Third in moto two went to Desalle who was followed by Kawasaki teammates Paulin and Van Horebeek who traded their moto on placings for the final race of the day.

Overall it was Cairoli with the win using his 2-1 moto scorecard followed by teammate De Dycker in second with a 1-2 score. Taking the final step on the podium was Desalle with a consistent 3-3 moto score.

Cairoli currently leads the premier class championship by 82 points over Paulin in second followed by Desalle, De Dycker and Kevin Strijbos who sit third, fourth and fifth respectively.

In the MX2 category it was once again the Jeffrey Herlings show. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing pilot took a solid 1-1 moto sweep of the event to continue his perfect season of overall wins.

KTM Silver Action’s Jose Butron earned himself a second overall result for the day, using a strong 2-3 moto scorecard to land himself the runner-up podium spot.

Rounding out the MX2 podium was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordi Tixier. The French rider used a 4-2 moto score to clinch the third overall position in Latvia. Rounding out the top five was Petar Petrov and Romain Febvre

Australia’s Dean Ferris finished 11th overall aboard his Monster Energy Yamaha following a bad start and a crash in moto one which forced him to settle for 18th place.

Ferris rebounded and took a solid seventh place finish in moto two for a strong finish to the day. The Queensland native currently sits sixth overall in the MX2 championship chase.

Herlings extends his MX2 series lead to 139 points over second place holder Tixier followed by Butron, Christophe Charlier and Glenn Coldenhoff.

The FIM Motocross World Championship heads to Finland on 14 July for round 12 of the 17-round series.
