Following a frustrating start to his 2013 MXD campaign, GYTR Yamaha’s Jay Wilson has received a boost in confidence after his fourth overall MX2 debut at Conondale’s fifth round of the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals.

With his regular MXD competition taking a break, Wilson was offered a wild card entry into the event and made the most of his opportunity to run with the best MX2 riders in Australia.

Entering the round with a relaxed attitude, the Queensland native put together a 5-7 moto scorecard to earn himself his impressive fourth overall spot on debut.

“It has been a frustrating start to the year in MXD so I came into this race just to have some fun and try and get some mojo back,” Wilson said.

“I got a good jump in the first one and tried to hang with the lead bunch for as long as I could and then in moto two I tried to ride a clean race and no make any mistakes and it paid off.”

Wilson is yet to show his true potential in the MXD class after entering the season as a hot favourite for the title. The 18-year-old hopes this strong MX2 result will set him up for an improved second half of the MXD season.

“I’m pumped about the result and hopefully this will be the start of a big finish to the year for me,” he added. “I can’t thank the GYTR Yamaha team enough for their support and it was good to have my family there as well.”

GYTR Yamaha teammate Joel Dinsdale also took a wild card entry into the event and showed strong form, but goggle issues and a scary crash hindered the 16-year-old’s results as he finished up in 20th spot overall.

“I was in fifth and starting to close up a bit on the rider in fourth when I hit a slick spot on one of the jumps out the back and the front of the bike just washed up the take-off,” Dinsdale explained. “Then when I took off, I had lost control of the bike.

“It’s nice to know that I can run with those guys and I really enjoyed racing with them but the crash was frustrating as I need to see each race out until the end and not make those mistakes.”

The GYTR Yamaha team will now drop back to the MXD class when the championship resumes at Appin in New South Wales on 14 June.
