DPH Motorsport Honda Racing’s Cheyne Boyd says that his current form is the best it’s been since he challenged for the Pro Open MX Nationals crown in 2009.

The experienced Victorian took the title down to the wire alongside then Yamaha teammate Jay Marmont, however the 2010 and 2011 series since then have proved frustrating ones for Boyd.

A switch back to the MX2 (formerly Pro Lites) category for this year has Boyd revitalised, which has his confidence back at its peak heading into the season opener at Conondale on 1 April.

“Everything right now is the best it’s been in a lot of years, I guess since 2009,” Boyd told MotoOnline. “It was unfortunate that I broke my leg last year and had a few months off after supercross, but it helped my ankle and leg to heal even more.

“I’m just really enjoying training and preparing for the Lites. On the bike, the way it feels with the Choice Suspension, it’s been improving all the time and I’m pumped with it. We’re not leaving one stone unturned going into round one.”

With doors closing on Boyd from all angles at the end of last year, he admits that the opportunity with DPH has boosted his motivation back in the Lites class. He proved his form on debut with a win in the Lites class of the Victorian titles at Wonthaggi.

“The step back to the 250 has definitely got the fire burning a little harder, I guess you could say,” Boyd said. “I sort of came to a point last year where I thought it was all over, so to get this opportunity with Dale, the support off Honda, FOX, Shift and everybody has been overwhelming.

“I really feel that getting back on the 250, I always practice on it well, and I know that I’ve done enough and fast enough to go and win. I was nervous because I’d never raced a 250 before, but I’ve been working really hard to get as light as I can while still maintaining strength.

Boyd won the Victorian state round ahead of Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing’s Ford Dale and talented rising star Joel Milesevic.
