Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Billy Mackenzie has admitted that he made too many mistakes during the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals to factor in the Pro Open title hunt at Coolum last weekend.

Mackenzie finished third in the championship after an injury-marred season, his two round wins and seven moto victories coupled with an inconsistent run at the closing rounds.

“This series for me wasn’t the best. I really wanted to win the championship after finishing second last year,” Mackenzie commented. “The competition was strong this year and we made too many mistakes.

“I picked up three injuries this year and had three bad rounds so it’s been tough, but we came away with third in the championship and made the best of a bad situation. I had a blast though, it’s been a fun year.”

Team manager Troy Carroll believes Mackenzie could have won the series this season, looking toward Super X and the 2012 season from this point.

“I think Billy could’ve done a lot better than he did,” he said. “Billy’s a strong rider and I’ve got a lot of faith in that guy – his outright speed is amazing. I think things just didn’t click properly for him this year.

“Definitely next year we’ll come back and give it another go if he wants to be here. Bring on Super X.”

Mackenzie finished third in the championship after taking second overall at Coolum, edging out teammate Dean Ferris for the final podium position in the series.
