Red Bull Teka KTM’s reigning world champion Antonio Cairoli is focused taking over the red plate in this year’s MX1 title chase following his 39th career GP victory at La Baneza in Spain last weekend.

Cairoli returned to his winning ways at the Spanish GP, dominating moto two from start to finish after taking second in the opening moto earlier in the day.

Despite a thumb injury sustained in Portugal a week earlier, the Italian shrugged off any effects to reach his best form of the season to date.

“I made one small mistake when I was leading in the first race when I was in the lead then I didn’t have the chance to pass again,” Cairoli explained.

“Then I took the holeshot in the second race. Tanel Leok was riding very fast and I couldn’t pull away but then maybe he was getting a bit tired so I could make a good gap.

“I think in Sweden we can take back the red plate.”

The result has thrown down the challenge to championship leader Clement Desalle who now leads the standings by a single point from Cairoli.
