Oz MX: Bopping extends state title lead in Port Macquarie

Bopping was again the man to beat in the NSW Motocross Championship at Port Macquarie.

Bopping was again the man to beat in the NSW Motocross Championship at Port Macquarie.

Motul Rockstar Suzuki’s Lawson Bopping has taken a clean sweep of the Pro Open class at round two of the 2010 The Helmet Warehouse NSW Motocross Championships, extending his series lead at Port Macquarie on Monday.

Reigning MX Nationals Pro Open Champion Jay Marmont looked strong in practice on his CDR Rockstar Yamaha, but when race one rolled around, it was Suzuki rider Keiron Hall who got the jump, but he was soon rounded up by Bopping and Marmont.

Hall sat back by race end to take a comfortable third place, as Bopping and Marmont checked out. However, when the flag fell it was Bopping in first place with Marmont looking for an answer in race two.

Race two and it was all Bopping from the outset, running away early. Marmont had a slip-up and dropped down the order, but spent all of his remaining laps chasing down the Motul Rockstar Suzuki rider.

It came down to a hard fought battle on the last lap, but Bopping held him off to take the round. Privateer Tom Leach proved that consistency and hard work pays off, running up-front during both races and ended the round in third overall.

Bopping again rode the Pro Lites class as well, but this time, he had more than one big name breathing down his throat.

Race one saw a battle between Kawasaki rider Luke George, Yamaha’s Luke Styke, JDR Motorex KTM’s Ryan Marmont and Bopping.

Series leader Michael Addison had plenty of speed, setting the fastest lap times during practice and both races. However, the Team Axis Motorsports rider found himself down the order from the start and had to work his way through the pack, en-route to fifth place.

The battle of the front-four was electric and had the big crowd on their feet. Banging ‘bars and swapping positions, the battle for the win went down to the last lap, when then leader Luke George cross-rutted and opened a small door – a door that Styke lined and shot through to take race one.

Race two saw Styke out front once again and found himself on the receiving end of a big chase, this time by Pro Open Series leader, Bopping. The pair ran away from the field and battled to the death, with Styke proving to strong in his first appearance of the 2010 series. Bopping finished second with Addison recovering to grab a third.

Overall, Styke took home the win, followed by Bopping in second. Luke George rounded out the podium.

In the Juniors held on Sunday, GMR Motorex KTM was represented at round two, lining up 85cc World MX Champ Jay Wilson and pocket rocket Reece Rayner on the start line. Both boys set about destroying the Hastings Valley track immediately, on route to scoring a perfect scorecard across the weekend respectively and grabbing a their fair share of trophies.

Honda Thor Junior Development Team rider Hayden Melross was once again almost unstoppable in both 13-U15 years classes, topping the podium on both occasions and proving that his training time in the U.S has fine tuned his already impressive skills.

Another stand out performance of the weekend was 12-U14 Years 85 class debutant, Dylan Heaton, who went head-to-head with kids twice his stature and came away with the overall win aboard his SS Racing Rockstar Chris Watsons Motorcycles Yamaha.

In the Junior Girls Lites and 150cc/85cc class it was Megan Rutledge who dominated grabbing the holeshot on most occasions, before checking out to impressive wins in each race, carting another perfect scorecard for the weekend.

In the 7-U9 Years 65 class, Rhys Budd was again the one to catch. However, it did have his dramas in race two, with Kye A’Hern grabbing the win, Budd still walked away with the number one trophy on Sunday night.
