BSB: Hill on Thruxton pole, McConnell first in Supersport

Worx Crescent Suzuki’s Tommy Hill will start from pole position at the second round of the 2010 British Superbike Championship at Thruxton after a dramatic Swan Combi Roll for Pole qualifying session on Saturday, smashing the lap record with a time of 1:14.366.

“It was an awesome lap but I didn’t even know what time I had done until I came back into pit lane as it wasn’t showing on the dashboard,” Hill said. “I was peaking when I found out; to be under the lap record is such a good feeling.

“I was sat in the motorhome after the crash this morning feeling a bit sorry for myself and then I got up and went to the garage and instantly felt ready to get back out there. The first session felt like being in Mad Max, but for me it is job done for today and see what happens tomorrow.”

Michael Rutter put in a last dash lap in the final minute to move second just ahead of Swan Honda’s Stuart Easton with Yukio Kagayama completing the front row.

There were several big hitters that missed out on the final shootout, including HM Plant Honda’s Ryuichi Kiyonari who got knocked out after Q2 and will start from 13th on the grid tomorrow for the opening race.

Michael Laverty was also forced out after Q2 after a heavy crash at the Club Chicane in the opening knockout, his Relentless Suzuki was too badly damaged to be repaired between the sessions.

The MSS Colchester Kawasaki pairing of Gary Mason and Howie Mainwaring also were 12th and 16th respectively.

Australia’s Josh Brookes was seventh fastest, looking forward to getting his championship on track come race time.

“I didn’t do many laps in qualifying and just went for a Superpole approach, with an out lap then the flying lap and then back in as that was enough to get through the first session,” he explained. “My middle run in Q2 was not bad and I knew I was in a good enough position to go through to Q3 which is obviously the one that matters.

“We had made a really slight change to the rear shock in the first two sessions, making it slightly harder but it was the wrong direction so we ended up going back to the softer option. I was ready for Q3 and thought I was going to be bang on the money and using just race tyres, I thought we would be on for the front row. It didn’t quite work out though but I am not concerned as I know we have a good setup and that we will be there to challenge tomorrow. The races are always a completely different story.”

Australian Billy McConnell scored the Supersport pole position, while Paul Young was fifth. Jason O’Halloran suffered a crash, ruling him out of the qualifying session, however he may be fit for race day.
