Fiat Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo has finished his season on a high note by setting the fastest lap on day two of testing at Valencia in Spain yesterday, riding a new evolution of the YZR-M1 to a quickest lap of 1:31.939.

Lorenzo bumped Australian Casey Stoner and Ducati from the top of the timesheets, but they comfortably remained second with a solid gap over Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi.

Both Lorenzo and Rossi headed home following the second day, with Stoner set to stay on for the half-day test today as they work on an all-new engine configuration and revised suspension settings on the Desmosedici.

A revelation on the second day of testing was Texan Ben Spies, dipping into the 32s for Monster Tech 3 Yamaha as he continues to find his feet in MotoGP, narrowly faster than fellow American Nicky Hayden.

Spies’ teammate Colin Edwards was unable to test after suffering from a virus overnight, finishing up his test schedule a day early.

Dani Pedrosa was the top Honda man on a new-look RC212V, not only working on new chassis components, but finally joining teammate Andrea Dovizioso in using Ohlins suspension.

LCR Honda’s Randy de Puniet was the fastest of the satellite riders in seventh, still riding his 2009 bike, albeit with revised geometry.

Rizla Suzuki’s Loris Capirossi set his fastest ever lap of Valencia on a heavily revised GSV-R to set the ninth quickest time, while Italian Marco Melandri just beat countryman Niccolo Canepa for the final position in the top 10.

Dovizioso struggled in 12th position, only ahead of the four full-time rookies who have stepped up from 250cc Grand Prix and continue to gain confidence in the 800cc four-stroke MotoGP machines.
