Former Australian motocross champion Jay Wilson has completed his first supercross laps ahead of his attack at the 2018 Australian Supercross Championship SX2 crown, shaking down the all-new 2019 Yamaha YZ250F.

The Yamalube Yamaha Racing ace undertook a 20-lap moto while coming to grips with the heavily revamped and upgraded model, stating the base of the quarter-litre machine is what he’s been trying to extract out of his factory prepared ’18 contender.

With limited parts currently available, the Queenslander is slated to remain aboard his current YZ250F for the final two rounds of the Pirelli MX Nationals, although he’s adamant on commencing supercross testing as soon as possible.

“We haven’t started testing, but I did do a 20-lapper on a supercross track aboard the 2019 bike to see where we’re at with it,” Wilson revealed to MotoOnline.com.au. “It was dead stock including the suspension, but it was cool and I’m really excited to get some supercross suspension and start training.

“I was just getting a feel for the bike and ended up doing a few laps around the supercross track. What we’ve been trying to get out of the 2018 bike is how the 2019 comes as a stock bike – it’s really nimble, I like the balance of the bike and the power is obviously really good. I’m just waiting on some suspension to get built [for supercross], then I’ll get into it.”

Ranked fifth in the MX2 standings, Wilson is hopeful of notching up two round victories before the season’s end at Coolum in Queensland on 11-12 August.
