Honda Racing rider anticipates ‘slow burn’ for 2025 progress.
Honda Racing’s Wilson Todd has returned to riding after recovering from a torn lisfranc sustained in September last year, with the Queenslander now on target for Wonthaggi’s Penrite ProMX season-opener next weekend.
March had always been the aim for the sophomore MX1 class racer, having previously explained that the particular injury has a lengthy recovery time. With two days on the motorcycle to date, Todd expects that a return to 100 percent health is still a ways off.
“I always wanted to jump back on [the bike] around March,” Todd told MotoOnline. “Which has obviously rolled around now, but it’s been a bit hard to get into, I guess, because the cyclone came about as soon as I started riding. But yeah, I’ve had like two days on the bike just cruising and rolling around.
“I’m not very strong, like a lot of the jumps and stuff I have to land on my heels and in awkward positions to try not flex my foot too much, but I’m just trying to put in some time and get those blisters out of the way and get a little bit of bike fitness before the foot comes around and I can boost it a bit harder.”
The expectations for Todd entering the 2025 season remain measured, with a ‘slow burn’ process the goal after being sidelined through injury for the last 11 months.
“The plan is to definitely get to Wonthaggi,” Todd continued. “I’m sure everyone knows, it’s been nearly 11 months of pretty much not riding, and just coming back I’m very, very cautious with the jumps and a lot of the bumps and stuff. I’m a bit worried to test it, so I’m mainly just trying to log some laps and build the rest of my body around riding at the moment.
“I wouldn’t say I’m feeling the best, but it’s a start. It’s definitely going to be a slow burn, but I just want to keep building. I don’t think there’s going to be much to write home about in the first few races.”
Rumours circulated last year that the four-time MX2 national champion could make a surprise return to the quarter-litre category, however, these were largely dependent on what current champion Brodie Connolly’s (Honda Racing) plans were, as a move to international aspirations were on the cards.
This has since been clarified by Todd, however, who explained that a place on the MX1 class grid is reaffirmed for 2025.
“No, I don’t think so,” Todd replied when asked if there were ever a possibility for a return to MX2. “Maybe [for] motocross last year, because I didn’t really get to race the 450 much. I guess it had a bit to do with whatever Brodie was doing.
“If Brodie [went overseas], then I would’ve taken that spot, that was the only option, but he obviously stayed, so I’m going to keep going on the 450 until supercross. The plan was always to go back to the 250 for that no matter what.”
