Suspected shoulder injury following WSX Australian Grand Prix weekend.
Defending Australian Supercross champion Dean Wilson’s season is up in the air after sustaining a suspected shoulder injury yesterday in the WSX Perth double-header, due to undergo further assessment this week.
After finishing P5 in round two, Wilson salvaged sixth on Sunday for round three despite contact putting him out of the SuperFinal and casting his AUSX title defence into doubt.
Wilson had his left shoulder in a protective sling late last night at HBF Park, but there has been no indication since whether he will be fit to enter Melbourne’s high-profile AUSX Open, which doubles as the final round of the 2024 championship.
“The extent of the injury won’t be known until after we receive the results of an MRI,” team owner Yarrive Konsky told MotoOnline. “Hopefully we can manage it during the week and he can race in Melbourne, but we don’t know yet. It’s extremely disappointing because Dean was riding so well.
“Dean was a victim of careless riding from another competitior, which is extremely frustrating, and it happens too often with a complete disregard for other people’s safety. Dean was riding fantastic tonight and has put in a massive effort for this season, so hopefully it’s not over but we won’t know until the next day or two.”
American import Joey Savatgy currently leads the domestic SX1 championship following four rounds, holding an eight-point advantage over Honda Racing teammate Wilson. Top Australian Luke Clout (Empire Kawasaki) is a further nine points outside of Savatgy.
Update: Wilson has since been to visit the renowned Dr. Steven Andrews in Brisbane and confirmed he has torn his labrum following a shoulder dislocation via contact with Vince Friese, but is yet to determine if he will be fit to ride upcoming races or if he will instead undergo surgery.
“Coming through the pack, trying to get around Vince, and go around him – pass him nice and clean through the whoops, super-clean. I’m moving forward, got three guys in front of me, and he just doesn’t try to turn, completely blindsides me, I didn’t even see it coming once again. There was no build up to this, haven’t had any beef with him since A1, and he just completely f**king drove it into me. People behind me that were in the race said they’ve never seen someone get hit so hard.
“Anyways, dislocated my shoulder, I’ve torn my labrum, and it’s putting everything in jeopardy as far as WSX and the UK goes. I didn’t see it coming, didn’t brace for it, nothing. I didn’t see there was even any need for it – typical Vince shit, and I think it’s complete f**king bullshit. I’ve said this millions of times. Where’s the punishment? He never gets penalised for anything he does and I’m just sick of it.
“Now I may have to get surgery, all the races I had planned, the cool things I had scheduled, are all in jeopardy because someone injured me. To say I’m frustrated is a very light way to put it… It just sucks, because I was on a pretty good roll and think I was riding pretty good. I just seen the doctors last night, got MRIs and all that, so I’ve got to figure out if I want to get surgery or not. It is what it is, I guess, but I just think it’s bullshit.”
