Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Cooper Webb will undergo further scans on his shoulder and hand following a costly mistake in Detroit’s main event, the defending 450SX champion crashing out of contention in an incident involving Chase Sexton.

Webb made another strong start in Ford Field’s main event, moving his way into third position by lap four, before he then started to drop back down the order and into the clutches of Team Honda HRC’s Sexton.

Entering a rhythm section on lap 17, Webb made a misjudgment which caused him to land into the face of the following jump. Sexton was clearly not able to anticipate a sudden loss of momentum from the KTM rider, left nowhere to go as he landed on Webb, bringing both riders down heavily.

Sexton – slow to his feet – was immediately out of the race as Webb heroically remounted and tried to salvage points, riding one-handed he eventually pulled into the pits to receive on-site medical attention.

Initial observation indicated that Webb didn’t break any bones in the crash, however, he plans to have further plans and evaluation on Monday in Florida upon returning home.

A statement from the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team read: “It’s fair to say that Cooper was pretty banged up when he was landed on. Upon initial observation by the doctor here at the track of his shoulder and hand, it doesn’t appear that anything is broken, but he plans to have further evaluation and X-rays when he returns home to Florida on Monday.”

It’s also been confirmed that minor bruises are the extent of the damage sustained by Sexton in the fall, the number 23 expected to line up this Saturday in Indianapolis. It remains unclear at this stage whether Webb will race at round 11.
