Motocross specialist suffers mechanical DNF in maiden desert race.
Penrite ProMX regular Maximus Purvis insists he’ll be back for the Hattah Desert Race next year after making a promising debut last weekend which ultimately ended in a DNF.
The WBR Yamaha rider landed a last-minute opportunity to fill-in for the injured Josh Green at ShopYamaha Off-Road Racing, piloting a purpose-built WR450F in the prestigious off-road event.
The New Zealander was highly impressive on debut, ranking fourth in the top-10 shootout before holding down third position until the halfway mark, where his weekend came to a premature end after snapping his gear shifter.
The experience, which marked his first-ever taste of desert racing, has motivated him to make a return in 2022 should the opportunity become available.
“I’ll definitely be doing Hattah next year – I’ll definitely be keen to do it again,” Purvis declared to MotoOnline.com.au. “I didn’t really know where I was going to be, I was just having a bit of fun really.
“I watched it the other year and always wanted to have a crack – it obviously didn’t finish the way I wanted it to, but I was feeling good, the track was mean, and it was a primo race.
“I was surprised how long I lasted – I think at the three-hour mark, I wasn’t even tired – I could just keep going. It was definitely something different – I had a lot more fun than a moto race – it was primo.”
Purvis will return to preparing for the next round of the ProMX championship, slated for 25 July at Wodonga in Victoria.
