First win of the season for Herlings in MXGP of Italy

Maiden MX2 victory grants Guadagnini the championship lead.

It was Jeffrey Herlings who claimed his first win of the 2021 MXGP World Championship at Maggiora in Italy, where the podium saw all three riders finish with equal points.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider recorded a 6-1 scorecard to be credited the win on countback, defeating Glenn Coldenhoff (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) and Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) – the trio completing the weekend on 40 points each.

Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and moto one winner Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing) finished in fourth and fifth respectively, while the championship is still led by reigning champion Tim Gajser (Honda HRC).

In the MX2 category, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini stormed to a career-first overall victory while claiming the points lead with a 2-1 results sheet, edging out Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing duo Maxime Renaux and Jago Geerts.

Fourth position was taken out by F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk ahead of race one winner Thibault Benistant (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing). Australians Jed Beaton (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) and Wilson Todd (Bike It MTX Kawasaki) were seventh and 18th overall respectively.

The MXGP World Championship now heads to The Netherlands on 18 July for round four of the series.
