It was Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Maxime Renaux (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) who claimed overall victories at Matterley Basin’s second round of the 2021 MXGP World Championship in Great Britain.

Former multi-time world champion Cairoli stormed to his first grand prix win of the season after putting in a stellar performance, recording a 1-3 scorecard to edge out reigning champion and points leader Tim Gajser (Honda HRC).

Gajser won the final moto to give himself the edge over third’s Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who rounded out the podium with 3-4 moto scores. The top five was completed by Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing) and Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), the pair both recording P2 finishes in moto two and moto one respectively.

In the MX2 category, Renaux charged to a well-deserved overall win with a strong 1-2 scorecard, defeating race two winner Mattia Guadagnini (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) for the top spot on the podium.

The top three was locked out by points leader Ruben Fernandez (Team Honda 114 Motorsports), while fourth and fifth were awarded to F&H Kawasaki Racing duo Mathys Boisrame and Roan Van De Moosdijk.

Australian Wilson Todd (Bike It MTX Kawasaki) was highly impressive to earn eighth overall with 10-11 results, while compatriot Jed Beaton (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) suffered a heavy crash in moto one, forcing him to retire from the outing with a damaged motorcycle, before charging to eighth in race two.

The MXGP World Championship will now head to Maggiora in Italy on 4 July for the third round of the series.
