Four-time supercross world champion Ryan Villopoto has reaffirmed his attendance at this weekend’s Monster Energy AUS-X Open Sydney, just days after the tragic passing of his father Dan Villopoto.

The famous number two explained promoter AUS SX Holdings granted him the opportunity to be released from his obligations in Australia throughout this difficult time, although he denied their offer and is currently making his way to the country.

“For six weeks me and dad were preparing for Sydney [AUS-X Open],” Villopoto said in a social media statement. “This was our goal everyday at the track. Tonight I’ll be flying out to Sydney to race and finish what we started – this is what he would have wanted me to do.

“This weekend will all be for you dad. Thanks for everyone reaching out and to the promoter who entirely left this decision to me and my family – this is what I wanted to do and needed to do.”

Villopoto will be joined by a strong contingent of world class talents from the US, including Australia’s very own world champion Chad Reed (Autotrader Yoshimura Suzuki Factory) along with current number one Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) and AMA regular Dean Wilson (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna).
