Pirelli MX Nationals MX1 debutant Mitch Evans has stunned onlookers as he charged to an impressive podium finish aboard his Raceline Pirelli KTM 450 SX-F at Newry’s opening round of the prestigious championship in Victoria today.

The youthful talent displayed his true intentions in the category early on in the day, qualifying through to the Raceline Performance Super Pole session before setting a blistering 1m54.861s time, positioning himself 2.061s clear of the second-fastest qualifier Brett Metcalfe (Penrite Honda Racing).

Evans would ride to a consistent a fifth in the opening 30-minute plus one lap affair, while he put on an incredible demonstration in race two, charging to a third place finish that ultimately rewarded him with the final step of the podium.

“It was pretty much a perfect day for me, that’s exactly what I wanted to do,” Evans told MotoOnline.com.au. “I’m even stoked to get my first super pole, so I knew I had the speed, it was just about holding that pace for the whole 30 [minutes]. I was happy with how my fitness was, I’ve just got to work on that and try to stick with those boys – I’m really happy with how today went.

“It’s definitely up there [with my other achievements], but I can’t get too excited about it yet – we’ve got a lot of work still to do, but I’m definitely stoked with that result for sure.”

Remaining modest about the impressive result, the Queenslander will now shift his attention on remaining inside the top three at Appin’s second stop of the 10-round tour on 29 April in New South Wales.
