Queensland’s Hunter Lawrence has made inroads to improving his performance at the faster circuits on the grand prix calendar after claiming fifth overall in MX2 at Redsand in Spain on Sunday.

The Team Honda 114 Motorsports rider scored fifth in both races, confident he made headway over the course of the weekend in a bid to challenge world champion Pauls Jonass at the front of the field.

“I was feeling a bit better than at Valkenswaard, despite the track being so fast and wide-open,” Lawrence reflected. “It seems to be a bit of a weakness of mine, these type of tracks, but after struggling in timed qualifying we made some improvements.

“I thought were much better for the races. I don’t think I’m back to 100 percent yet and I’m still lacking those explosive bursts that I need to challenge the top guys, but I’ll keep working and the next round in Italy should be good.”

With a podium at Argentina’s opening round the high point of his campaign so far, Lawrence now sits in fourth place in the championship as the series now has a weekend off before the MXGP of Trentino in Italy.
