Serco Yamaha’s Mitch Evans is adamant on maintaining the same mentality into the Australian Supercross Championship that saw him claim third in the MX2 category of the Motul MX Nationals.

Evans has limited experience in supercross, only racing the opening round of last year’s series before a broken wrist during practice at Toowoomba’s second stop ruled him out of the remaining rounds.

“Already my preparation is a lot better from the start,” Evans explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “The mentality that I had for motocross really worked for me, so if I take the same mentality into supercross and play it smart, know when to back it down, not do anything stupid and be consistent, then that will pay off for me.

“Last year I ended up getting hurt at round two, so I didn’t really get to race much against the SX2 boys. We did a couple of days down in Brisbane before I came back home to Cairns. I’ve been doing my own thing up here, Jackson [Richardson] obviously can’t do supercross yet, so I’ve pretty much been doing motos by myself at the moment.

“Everything is going good and I’m enjoying it, it’s definitely a better preparation than what we had last year – last year I only had three or four days on the bike.”

The youthful talent is aiming to get through complete six-round series healthy, mentioning he’ll be satisfied if he can make it on the box throughout the championship.

“If I end up on the box, I’ll be happy,” he continued. “Just as long I stay healthy and consistent, that’s the main thing for me. I’ve ended up injured in the last two supercross seasons, so I mainly want to stay healthy and have fun doing it – if I have fun, I’m sure good results will come.”

The Australian Supercross Championship is scheduled to kick off at Jimboomba X Stadium in Queensland, on 23 September.
