Davey Motorsports KTM’s Egan Mastin has been crowned the 2017 Motul MX Nationals MX2 champion after claiming the overall victory at Coolum’s 10th and final stop of the series.

It was dramatic weekend for Mastin and championship rival Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Yamaha) after the pair allegedly coming together in Saturday’s practice. Todd was forced to seek a medical clearance, while Mastin was handed a controversial 25 position penalty on his qualifying placing.

In moto one, it DPH Motorsport Yamaha’s Hayden Mellross hitting the front early on, but it was Mastin who stole the top spot in a matter of laps to take a convincing race win and the points lead.

Mellross maintained second for the next portion of the race before dropping to fourth, as pole-sitter Kyle Webster (Penrite CRF Honda Racing) secured the runner-up spot to cross the line in second.

Todd (DPH Mosoldiered through for third after a heavy crash in yesterday’s practice, while the top five was rounded out by Mitch Evans (Serco Yamaha) and Hamish Harwood (Davey Motorsport KTM).

Sixth through to 10th was completed by Jay Wilson (Raceline Pirelli KTM), Dylan Wills (KSF Racing Husqvarna), Isaac Ferguson (KTM), Maximus Purvis (Yamaha) and Tomas Ravenhorst (Yamaha), while early leader Mellross lodged a DNF score after pulling in with a mechanical malfunction.

Todd shot out to the lead following a brilliant hole-shot with Mastin in tow, the pair would battle for the position – which would ultimately determine the championship – up until the halfway mark, where Todd made a costly mistake, allowing Mastin to go by.

Todd remounted, but Mastin’s advantage proved too much, and the New South Welshman would be crowned the 2017 MX2 champion after taking the race win. Webster pushed through from a mediocre start for third, as Mellross and Evans concluded the top five.

Jayden Rykers (Raceline Pirelli KTM) and Wilson were sixth and seventh, followed by Connor Tierney (WBR Bulk Nutrients), Wills and Hugh McKay (WBR Bulk Nutrients). Mastin was first for the day ahead of Todd and Webster, while the top three in the championship would be credited Mastin, Todd and Evans.

In the Women’s category, Maddy Brown (DPH Motorsport Yamaha) edged out defedning champion Jess Moore (KTM) for the title, as the Amateur Cup was won by Kerrod Morrissy (KTM), but it was Chase Mosig (Yamaha) who won the day.

KTM-mounted Regan Duffy captured the 125cc Junior Cup, as Bailey Malkiewicz (Husqvarna) won the overall ahead of Mason Semmens (KTM) and Jack Kukas (Yamaha).

The Vets 30-39 class was taken out by Mosig (Yamaha), while former national champion Cameron Taylor was victorious in the Vets 40-plus division.
