KTM support riders roost to MX2 and MXD wins at Nowra

KTM Australia press release:

KTM support riders Egan Mastin and Callum Norton both claimed stunning wins at the sixth round of the MX Nationals at Nowra yesterday, as orange riders filled four of the six available MX2 and MXD podium positions.

Riding his Davey Motorsport KTM 250 SX, Mastin won the MX2 round from Jackson Richardson and Raceline KTM’s Jayden Rykers, while Norton’s win in the MXD category came ahead of Hugh McKay and fellow orange pilot Isaac Ferguson.

Mastin put a week of illness behind him to bounce back and win the opening MX2 moto from Raceline’s Jayden Rykers – who was enjoying a welcome return to the spotlight after a recent dry spell since relocating to the eastern states.

Mastin took a comfortable second in the final race to ensure the round win, while Rykers’ journey to the podium was far more adventurous, after the young Western Australian fell while in good track position at turn one.

He directed his KTM 250 SX-F and his aggression into a monumental charge from 27th to fifth, but crashed heavily in the final moments while working a move on fourth and third place, ending the race with sixth, a concussion …and his first overall podium of the year.

Last-start MX2 winner Hamish Harwood was seventh on the day and slipped two places to fifth in the championship, while Jay Wilson placed his KTM 250 SX into 10th on the day.

MXD Under 19s:

In MXD racing, big Victorian MXD rookie Cal Norton built on a couple of early-season podium finishes to take his first-ever MXD round win at Nowra aboard the Moto Tech KTM 250 SX-F. He led home Hugh McKay and Isaac Ferguson.

Norton went 3-3 on the day while Ferguson posted 5-2 finishes.

Raceline KTM rider Morgan Fogarty was 8-5 to be eighth on the day, but maintained his third position in the championship behind Jy Roberts and Cody Dyce.

Egan Mastin – KTM 250 SX: “The last couple of races have been good for me and I got a 1-2 today. I got off in second place in the first moto and got into the lead. I had a little gap and just maintained it for the whole 30 so I was happy. Moto two I ended up getting the holeshot and I was out front for a little while and then Richardson got me. I was just running a little bit tight in the last one, but it was still not a bad race. I knew if I sat second I had the overall, and I was a little bit down on energy from being sick all week, so to come out with a second in that race – I was pretty happy with it.”

Jayden Rykers – KTM 250 SX-F: “Today was my first time on the box since Conondale last year. It was a long dry spell and it’s been frustrating working and not getting the results. I holeshot the first moto, but then made one mistake in the opening turns and Mastin got past me. We kind of checked out and did our own thing, so that moto was easy in the sense that I didn’t have to do too much work for my result. But in the second I got another good jump, but people bottled up in the corner, and coming out of the first turn I unfortunately went down. I fought back from 27th to fifth and tried to set up a pass on fourth and third, but ended up jumping off the side of the track and going over the handlebars. I came down pretty hard, but managed to bring it home in sixth for third overall. After my good moto result in the first one, I was desperate to back it up and get a podium. I had that bulldog, don’t-give-up attitude and kept that going. I would have been pretty sour if I didn’t end up getting on the box. I’m a bit concussed and feeling a bit rocky at the moment, but I’m happy.”

Callum Norton – KTM250 SX-F: “Kaleb went off the track and missed about 200m of track before coming on, so he got protested and that made me third in the second one, so I ended up coming 3-3, and getting the overall by a point! We had wait nearly an hour for the outcome – but it was a good result for me. I felt consistent and didn’t really get tired at all, but my starts weren’t perfect, which didn’t help at all because the track was hard to pass on. In moto one, I was pretty happy with that third. I rode a nice, solid race and didn’t throw anything away, so that was good. Moto 2 I got a bad start but I ended up worked my way from fifth/sixth up to third.”
