The 2017 Motul MX Nationals season finale at Coolum Pines Motocross Track is set to go ahead as planned following recent Sunshine Coast fires that threatened to severely damage the facility.

According to Williams Event Management (WEM) director, Kevin Williams, the fire barely missed the circuit and its facilities were not affected in any way.

“They were very lucky,” Williams told MotoOnline.com.au. “It burnt right around the back edge of the facility, so they didn’t actually lose anything.

“The fire came right up to the access road fence behind the canteen but it didn’t get over, which was fortunate because at the back of the canteen and the toilets there’s a lot of gas bottles, so if it got any further they probably would have lost a lot.”

A marquee event on the Australian motocross calendar, Williams is thankful both riders and fans can continue to enjoy the popular Queensland location over the coming years.

“Everybody enjoys going to Coolum for the final round,” Williams said. “The track only has a contract until 2020, so we want to make sure that we continue to enjoy it while the contract is in place. We do hope that we can work with the council to see that contract extended in the future.”

Coolum’s 2017 Motul MX Nationals season finale will take place on 19-20 August where both the MX1 and MX2 champions will be crowned.
