Dunlop's Reed dominates AUS-X Open as Richardson claims SX2 title

Dunlop Tyres press release:

Dunlop-equipped Chad Reed dominated the 2016 AUS-X Open inside Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on 12-13 November, while Jackson Richardson clinched this year’s Australian SX2 Supercross Championship for Serco Yamaha.

American-based Yamaha icon Reed won both nights of the AUS-X Open in his homecoming to Australia. Reed, who came into the event with the goal in mind, became the first rider to sweep both SX1 main events during the huge double-header season finals.

Reed’s US teammate Cooper Webb bounced back from a fourth on night one to shadow the Aussie ace on night two for a strong second-place finish, wrapping up his second appearance at the spectacular event with a podium.

Australian CDR Yamaha regulars Dean Ferris and Dan Reardon battled it out in Sydney for second- and third-place honours in the SX1 standings. Ferris, in his first full premier class supercross season, claimed the runner-up spot ahead of defending champion Reardon.

Also making a headline appearance in Sydney for the first time ever was retired four-time AMA Supercross champion Ryan Villopoto, the Dunlop-supported Monster Energy Kawasaki hero lining up for a one-off weekend and going 6-4 in the main events.

It was a dramatic ending to the SX2 championship in Sydney with Australia’s Hayden Mellross of the DPH Motorsport Yamaha team and Richardson of the Serco Yamaha team battling it out for the number one plate.

As the chequered flag flew it was Richardson who claimed the SX2 championship via a pair of runner-up results across the weekend, with Mellross bowing out of the final main event of the season due to a mechanical issue with just two laps remaining of the 15-lap race.

Mellross, who held the series leading red plate from round two of the series, dropped back to third overall in points following the unfortunate DNF, however was gracious in defeat during the Dunlop-supported event that aired live on Fox Sports domestically and also broadcast internationally.
