Multiple Australian supercross and motocross champion Jay Marmont is taking a realistic approach in his return to racing in the 2016 Australian Supercross Championship.

Marmont announced his plans to come out of retirement earlier this month, revealing today that he will continue to remain level-headed and calculated in the championship hunt.

“My aim this weekend is to beat all of the Australian riders, I feel I need to keep them behind and make this my bad round,” Marmont explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “If I can make that happen and accomplish it, then I’ll just chip away at the championship from there.”

The New South Welshman is excited to return to professional racing, and despite competing on factory teams for majority of his career, he believes that racing under his brother’s MXR&D Husqvarna program won’t have an influence on his results.

“To be honest, I feel a real urge and excitement – I haven’t raced in almost two years. It’s really exciting and I’m really happy with my setup,” he continued. “The only pressure out there is the pressure I put on myself, and I don’t believe big teams have a lot of influence on winning championships in supercross, it comes down to the talent of the rider – we only race one heat and one 20-lap final.”

Marmont expressed the importance of gaining valuable points in the first half of the season prior to the season finale in Sydney, which will see an additional line-up of American and Australian heavy hitters.

“If you haven’t done your damage by Sydney, it’s going to be hard to win the championship. It’s very important to walk away from these first few rounds with maximum points and come out swinging by Adelaide,” the 33-year-old stated.

“It’s a hard championship and the big points are up for grabs now. Leading into Sydney, the most points you’ll earn that night are 15 to be realistic – we have Cooper Webb, Chad Reed and Ryan Villopoto there.”

This weekend’s season opener at Jimboomba will mark Marmont’s first professional race since the conclusion of the 2014 Australian supercross series at the Brisbane Entertainment centre.
