Waters and Wilson wrap up Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki’s first season on a high

Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki press release:

The Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki Racing Team have wrapped up the final round of the 2016 Motul MX Nationals with the round ten overall, another top ten finish, and third in the Thor MX1 Championship, after a successful outing at Coolum today.

Both MX1 pilots Waters and Wilson gave everything they had at the final round of the series this afternoon, with their efforts rewarded with top results at the season decider.

Waters, who once again made an appearance in GoPro Superpole this morning where he finished in second with a 1:45.511 lap time, raced to 2nd position in moto one after battling with fellow title hopefuls, while in race two, everything came together, with Waters finding an extra gear late in the moto, to launch from 3rd to 1st, where he stayed for the remainder of the moto.

Not only did today’s results reward Waters and the Suzuki backed team with the top step of the podium at the conclusion of the round, Waters also secured third in the overall Thor MX1 Championship in what is the team’s first ever MX Nationals season.

For teammate Wilson, round ten saw the Queenslander achieve the goals he had set out for himself prior to arriving at Coolum. Wilson who qualified in 12th, wrapped up moto one in 12th position, while in race two, Wilson delivered the best result of the season, crossing the line in an impressive 8th place. Wilson also concluded today’s racing in 8th overall for the round.

With consistent top ten finishes towards the end of the motocross season, Wilson wrapped up his 2016 Championship campaign just outside the Thor MX1 top ten, in 12th position.

Todd Waters – MX1 – 3rd Thor MX1 Championship – 647 points (1st Overall at Round 10)

“This weekend was exactly how we wanted to finish the season, and I’ve been chasing rounds like this all year,” Waters shared.

“A lot of times this season I’ve had a good first moto but things haven’t played out so well in the second one, but today it was the other way round and did what we came here to do.

“I actually ran out of tear offs in the second race, and I just thought to myself, “I have got to get out in front”, it just gave me that motivation to dig deep and I made it happen.

“I just rode my best today and let whatever happen happen, which has paid off, and I’m just wrapped to finish with one final podium and third in the championship.”

Luke Wilson – MX1 – 12th Thor MX1 Championship – 270 points (8th Overall at Round 10)

“I’m pumped with how today went. I didn’t ride exactly how I wanted to and I was really tired in both motos, but I finished in 8th overall and that’s the best I’ve ever done,” Wilson shared.

“I’m happy to have finished the season on a high which is exactly what we planned to do this weekend, so hopefully I can carry that over in to Supercross.

“I’m really happy for Todd as well, he finished on the best note possible today, and for myself, I think I missed six races this year, so if I didn’t miss those I think we would have wrapped up the year well and truly inside that top ten, so I’m happy.”

Neale Wilson – Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki Team Manager

“What can I say, but what better way to wrap up this year’s season than with one last round win, third in the championship, and another top ten finish,” Wilson shared.

“When we started this journey at the beginning of the year we knew it was going to be a challenge being a brand new team, but I’m very proud of both Todd and Luke for everything they have achieved this season.

“I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to our dedicated sponsors both new and old. This year wouldn’t have been possible without their support and we’re all very pleased to have rewarded them with one last impressive result this afternoon.

“Finally, a huge thanks to the team under the truck and of course at home. There is a lot of work that goes in behind the scenes to ensure the boys are on the line every weekend, and we are very lucky to be working with some of the best in the business.

“This was a huge year for us, and it’s wrapped up close to perfectly at Coolum, so we’ll now reset for Supercross, and see what we can do there.”

Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki will now begin preparations for the first round of the 2016 Australian Supercross Championship which will take place at Jimboomba in Queensland, on September 17.
