Rewind: Mosig's Toowoomba sweep

Taking a look back at Mosig's 2015 Echo Valley excellence.

As the 2016 Motul MX Natioanls series prepares to return to Echo Valley in Toowoomba this Sunday, we’re taking a look back at Kade Mosig’s impressive MX1 overall victory one year ago at the very same event. Part of Craig Dack’s CDR Yamaha squad in 2015, the Victorian rode flawlessly to capture a 1-1 sweep in the hotly contested category, a career-first for Mosig in the premier class.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Mosig’s 1-1 sweep was the moto one battle with New Zealand’s Ben Townley of the Penrite Honda team. Mosig overtook Townley early in the race and would then withstand immense pressure for the duration of the 30-minute moto to claim victory by just 0.332s – that’s nail biting stuff right there. Mosig later told MotoOnline.com.au that the battle with Townley was indeed the highlight of his professional career.

“That first moto with BT is definitely the highlight of my career,” said Mosig. “Getting to race with an AMA and MXGP champion and go one-on-one was intense. Neither of us backed off for the full race and I had to lay it all on the line to beat him. It was one of those races that I’ll remember for a long time, I think. I just tried to narrow my focus onto the laps and riding as smoothly as possible. It was a close finish, but to get that win was insane.”

Mosig and Townley had stretched a gap of almost 40 seconds over their closest contender Dan Reardon as the chequered flag flew; those two were clearly on another level. Moto two saw Townley take the early lead, before the now retired Adam Monea jumped out in front and eventually went down allowing Mosig to push his way back to the lead once again. Mosig went on to win moto two by 14 seconds over second place rider Monea to lock up the best performance of his career.

“It was the best result of my career and I’m just ecstatic about it,” he added. “I’ve been feeling good and have kicked a few goals this year and it’s so motivating to see it all come together. I came into Toowoomba with some good preparation and feeling comfortable after spending a bit of time at Jacob Wright’s place. I put in some good work during the week and on the weekend it all fell into place how I wanted it to. We turned up on Sunday and I felt good right away; I was fifth in qualifying then finished fourth in Super Pole, which is my best qualifying result too.

This weekend’s round nine of the 2016 Motul MX Nationals marks one year since Mosig, now part of the National Pump Monster Energy Kawasaki squad, has captured an overall victory in the MX1 category. Can Mosig return to his blistering 2015 form this Sunday? Anything is possible and it sure would stir up the championship chase between Kirk Gibbs, Dean Ferris and Todd Waters.
