Queensland YJR fire into 2016 SSMX

Yamaha Motor Australia press release:

The Queensland Yamaha Junior Racing duo of Jake Williams and Levi Rogers started the 2016 season on a positive note, logging some impressive results at round one of the Sunshine State Motocross Series, held at the sandy Hervey Bay circuit over the weekend.

Both riders performed well at the opening round and have put themselves in good position as the work their way through the six rounds to determine this years’ winners in the long running and highly regarded championship.

New to the team for 2016 is Jake Williams, who shook off some pre-event nerves to claim the round win in the 15 years 250cc and the 13-15 years 125cc in an impressive team debut. Williams dominated the 15 years 250 class with three wins from three starts, while a second place finish in the final 125 leg, was his only blemish for the day, finishing with 1-1-2 results on his YZ125.

“Today was a good way to start the series and nice to get a good result in my first ride with the team,” Williams explains. “Sand isn’t my strongest surface but I have tried to improve on it since riding the junior nationals in WA last year.

“Both my bikes were awesome today and to have the support of Yamaha Junior Racing and our team sponsors is amazing. I would keep riding tonight if they let me,” Williams ends.

Levi Rogers has made the jump to the 12-U14 years’ 85cc class riding the big wheel YZ85 for the first time at a major event. Rogers made a good fist of things in his first outing and showed he had plenty of speed to run near the front. Rogers finished in fifth for the day with small falls costing him in races one and three.

He finished with 8-3-7 results and missed taking a top three result by just two points.

“I made too many mistakes in the first and third races,” Levi said. “In both of those races I was trying to move into the top three and crashed trying to make a pass. I just need to pick my spots a little better and not rush all the time. But it was good to know that I’m not too far away and I just need to keep trying to improve every race.

The Queensland YJR team will no shift focus to round two of the series to be held at Tivoli Raceway on April 9 and 10.
