Yamaha the top-selling dirt bikes through third quarter

A total of 75,848 new motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and scooters have been sold between January and September 2015, down 2.5 percent in comparison to the same period in 2014.

Road motorcycles accounted for 42.7 percent of the 75,848 sales, off-road accounted for 32.2 percent, ATVs accounted for 19.8 percent and scooters accounted for 5.3 percent, according to FCAI chief executive Tony Weber.

Total sales in the off-road segment declined 6.3 percent compared to last year, however it was Yamaha that led the way selling 29.3 percent of the 24,429 dirt bikes sold to date in 2015. Yamaha was followed by Honda with 27 percent and KTM with 16.3 percent.

Overall Honda was the leading volume manufacturer between 1 January and 30 September 2015, with 22.5 percent (17,085) of motorcycle, ATV and scooter sales. Honda was followed by Yamaha with 20 percent (15,183), Kawasaki with 9.8 percent (7443) and Suzuki with 9.3 percent (7045).
