Australian MXGP export Dean Ferris is expected to announce he’s returning home for 2016 during the pre-race press conference at this weekend’s Motocross of Nations in Ernee, France.

Ferris has been competing internationally – MXGPs for all but a short stint in the US at the beginning of last year – since 2012, winning three MX2 World Championship races including an overall round in Belgium during 2013.

It’s been tipped since the Coolum MX Nationals finals that 25-year-old Ferris has signed for the powerhouse CDR Yamaha outfit for his homecoming next season, off the back of a full season in MXGP with Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing on board an FC 350 this year where he finished 11th in the standings.

“I do know what I’m doing, but I want to wait until next weekend at the Motocross des Nations and we’ll do it at the press conference,” Ferris explained at Glen Helen’s USGP last weekend. “We’ll make an announcement with what I’m doing and where I’m riding, so…”

When pushed further to elaborate on his plans regarding what continent he’ll be racing on, Ferris said that it will be on his “favourite one” with some laughs to follow – indicating a return to Australia is imminent.

Ferris’ rookie MXGP campaign in 2012 with IceOne Racing Kawasaki was thwarted by injuries, before a step to MX2 in 2013 with the Dixon-operated Monster Energy Yamaha team resulted in him finishing sixth in the championship. He also starred as part of Team Australia at the MXoN, finishing second in MX2 and fourth overall alongside Brett Metcalfe and Todd Waters.

Last year saw Ferris start the season in the US as part of Red Bull KTM following his stunning MXoN showing, before a wrist injury mid-season eventually saw him return to MXGP with IceOne Husqvarna, where a broken femur in Brazil spelt an end to his season.

Still, his potential led to a full season in MXGP this year with the official Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna team, where he finished with a season-high of fourth in Sweden, along with multiple top five and 10 appearances.

CDR Yamaha team owner Craig Dack has also recently declined to comment when contacted locally by MotoOnline.com.au. The Australian factory Yamaha MX1 team last won the MX Nationals title in 2012 with grand prix great Josh Coppins.
