Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s new MXGP World Champion Romain Febvre upstaged some of the United States’ best on home soil at Glen Helen on Sunday, winning the final round of the 2015 season.

Febvre went 1-2 to secure the overall victory in hot Southern Californian conditions, fending off Cooper Webb (Star Racing Yamaha) in moto one and trailing Josh Grant (Monster Energy Kawasaki) in the second.

The opening moto belonged to Febvre by just 0.724s in an entertaining duel, while heat race winner Grant fought his way to third. Come moto two it was Grant who took victory over a fast-finishing Febvre and the flawless Webb in his MXGP debut.

Of the Australian contingent, Todd Waters (Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna) rallied to 17th overall with 19-13 results, one place ahead of Dean Ferris (Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna) in 18th via an 18-14 scorecard, while Kirk Gibbs (KTM Motocross Racing Team) bounced back from an opening moto DNF with 16th in moto two for 20th overall.

It was another impressive showing from New Zealand’s former world champion Ben Townley, riding his Pro Circuit-equipped Honda to 11th in moto one, but was forced to exit the second moto in the early stages. Countryman Cody Cooper was credited 33rd overall, outside of the points.

The US-based riders endured a mixed weekend, led by Grant in second overall, while Webb was third, Dean Wilson (Red Bull KTM) fourth, Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) 10th, Davi Millsaps (BTO Sports KTM) 11th and Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) 16th.

Multiple-time world champion Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM) made a spirited return from injury for 13th overall after scoring fifth in race one. He led the early laps of moto two, but registered a DNF after pulling out near race’s end.

The final world championship standings saw Febvre previously crowned ahead of Honda duo Gautier Paulin and Evgeny Bobryshev. Waters rose for a credible ninth overall in his first full MXGP campaign, with Ferris closing out his foreseeable grand prix career with 11th in the series.

Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Red Bull KTM’s Jessy Nelson took home a brilliant double moto victory in MX2, but it was Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser who clinched the 2015 MX2 World Championship.

Nelson won the opening moto over Chris Alldredge (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and top qualifier Shane McElrath (Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Red Bull KTM), while Gajser came home in fourth position as top of the European regulars.

The second moto was once again Nelson on top of the podium, this time followed by teammate McElrath and Valentin Guillod (Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube) – the trio also sealing the overall round podium placings. Fourth was enough for Gajser to clinch the world title over Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM) and Max Anstie (Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki).
