Bike: 2016 Yamaha YZ250F

Updated 2016 YZ250F includes 60th anniversary edition.

An upgraded 2016 Yamaha YZ250F has been unveiled by Yamaha, including a limited edition 60th anniversary yellow colourway alongside the traditional Team Yamaha blue/white option.

New for 2016

– New piston: A new lightweight forged two-ring piston uses a flat piston crown surface with additional strengthening ribs and a shorter, more durable piston pin with diamond like carbon (DLC) coating. The new piston is lighter, significantly stronger and together with revised EFI mapping, improves combustion performance for a faster, more thorough burn, resulting in excellent pulling power.

– Oil jets: Revised piston oil jets direct oil underneath the new piston, to help promote cooling and contribute to more stable engine performance.

– Updated shifter: Revisions to the clutch boss and shift stopper arm provide smooth clutch engagement feel and more precise shifting action when the gate drops.

– New crank: Optimised crankshaft and counterbalancer designs feature a revised balance ratio, predictive power delivery and reduced vibration.

– Updated ECU: New ECU settings provide smoother transition as the rider reaches the rev limiter.

– New brakes: 270mm front disc brake, up from 250mm, uses new brake pad material for exceptional stopping power and control for aggressive corner entries.

– Updated suspension: New suspension settings front and rear are designed to eliminate sudden jolts and better control front-end dive, for a smoother, more balanced damping feel through the corner.

Key features

– Innovative engine: Liquid-cooled, DOHC, four-valve, fuel-injected engine with the same forward-positioned, straight intake, rear-inclined cylinder and rear positioned exhaust layout as the YZ450F, now with further optimised crank balance and even more advanced piston technology between the cases.

– Advanced fuel injection: The four-titanium-valve cylinder head is matched to a battery-less fuel injection system that provides optimised power at any rpm. The fuel injection system instantly adjusts the air/fuel mixtures depending on altitude and temperature, for a hesitation-free engine that delivers no matter the conditions.

– Bilateral beam aluminum frame: The aluminum Bilateral Beam frame offers a superb rigidity balance and provides unmatched lightweight handling, with updated suspension settings for smoother damping feel.

– Wraparound rear positioned exhaust layout: The exhaust pipe has an innovative layout, circling the cylinder, giving the exhaust pipe proper length for an excellent exhaust pulse effect. At the same time, the exhaust pipe has three different diameters throughout the exhaust tract, bringing out excellent power characteristics. This layout allows the silencer to be moved forward, behind the side panel, making it closer to the middle of the bike for centralized mass for superior handling.

– Mass-centralised ergonomics: The layout of the seat, fuel tank, air box, and wrap-around exhaust system moves the bike’s mass towards the center for exceptional handling. The front intake layout with large air filter element adds the benefit of reduced air filter maintenance due to its positioning away from dirt roost from the rear wheel.

– New 270mm front brake: Beefy 270mm front disc brake coupled with new pad material offers outstanding braking power and performance, with exceptional controllability.

– Embedded graphics: Yamaha’s embedded graphics are built into the bodywork for extended durability, resisting both peeling and damage.

– GYTR Power Tuner ready: Accessory GYTR Power Tuner lets owners adjust air/fuel mixture and ignition timing maps to match engine performance characteristics to the rider and track conditions in a matter of seconds with the push of a few buttons, as well as monitor engine diagnostic codes.

Engine highlights

– Innovative design: A liquid-cooled, DOHC, four-valve, fuel-injected engine with the same forward-positioned straight intake, rear-inclined cylinder and rear positioned exhaust layout as the YZ450F. The engine, with its straight and symmetrical intake and exhaust ports and compact, high compression combustion chamber, delivers outstanding engine character in the high speed range.

– Advanced fuel injection: The adjustable fuel injection system uses a 44mm throttle body fed by a high-pressure battery-less electric fuel pump. This ensures optimum fuel atomisation and air/fuel calibration for excellent rideability in a wide range of riding conditions. The system controls the volume of fuel injected and the ignition timing based on engine rpm and throttle opening, providing hesitation-free response and controllability.

– New piston, rod and crankshaft balance: The all-new, flat-top designed forged piston now features a bridge-box design for additional strength, yet is even lighter for 2016. The piston, rings and new DLC-coated piston pin, along with the offset cylinder configuration, all reduce friction loss and contribute to quick response, while the updated oil cooling jet ensures high rpm reliability. As before, the YZ250F’s intake/exhaust ports, cam profiles, ECU, carburized crank and newly optimized balance ratios for the crank and balancer all work together to create the YZ250F’s outstanding engine character with more power in the high-rpm range.

– Exhaust layout: As with the YZ450F, an innovative exhaust pipe design is adopted to increase mass centralisation and improve power development characteristics. This layout moves the rear end of the exhaust pipe farther forward and enables a muffler position close to the center of the mass. Adjustments are made in the pipe diameter in its various sections resulting in excellent exhaust pulse effect that contributes to high rpm power output, while a new muffler bracket reduces weight.

– Compact engine layout: The compact wet sump lubrication system with new piston cooler spray jet maintains excellent engine durability and eliminates the need for an oil tank, which lowers engine weight. This creates a more compact engine that contributes to mass centralisation and unmatched handling.

– Updated clutch: The clutch and shift mechanisms are updated for 2016 to reduce drive-force loss during gear changes and produce smoother shift action under the heavy demands of motocross racing.

Chassis highlights

– Updated suspension settings: Industry-leading, fully adjustable KYB spring-type fork with speed sensitive damping features revised valving for improved suspension feel and balance in each section of a corner, from entrance to exit. The KYB rear shock also features settings optimized for ideal damping characteristics.

– Race-ready construction: The large diameter 22mm front axle and beefy top triple clamp provide rigidity for unmatched handling and front-end feel. The four-position adjustable handlebar mounts are rubber mounted to improve comfort and reduce handlebar vibration.

– New 270mm front brake: A new 270mm front brake disc is the same system fitted to the 2016 YZ450F and is a huge 20mm larger than the disc fitted to the 2015 model, using an all-new pad material for exceptional stopping power and braking control.

– Compact fuel tank and air box: The Yamaha-exclusive fuel tank and air cleaner box layout positions the fuel tank mass closer to the center of the bike which improves handling feel. Furthermore, the air box is positioned in front, away from the dirt kicked up from the rear wheel and can be accessed without tools for easy serviceability of the air cleaner.
