Moto 360

An all-access view of Australian dirt bikes, presented by Alpinestars.

After an incredibly busy week it’s Saturday on the Easter long weekend as we pen this quick Moto 360 to cap off the week. For the first time this year there are no major international or national races on, which comes as a timely opportunity to regather and push on for the rest of the season.

We’re still buzzing from Horsham’s opening MX Nationals round last weekend, albeit with Dylan Wilson in our thoughts the whole way (see more from Simon Makker below), and it was a sensational start to the season.

KTM’s Kirk Gibbs looks to have peaked right when it matters with a clean-sweep to start the season in MX1, while fellow podium-placers Kade Mosig (CDR Yamaha) and Luke Styke (KTM) were both solid – and coming in with a season in New Zealand under their belts.

We’ve had a load of features from the weekend published already, but the big story was Matt Moss’ disastrous start to the season and he’s now 40 points behind Gibbs in the series already. What that essentially means is, Mossy won’t be able to make any more major mistakes if he’s to factor for a third-straight title.

Aside from Gibbsy’s dominance, you could almost throw a blanket over the top 10 to 12 guys in the field, which bodes well for an amazing season to come. We knew it’d be tight, but judging by the form of round one (and it is only one round), a lot of guys have what it takes to win races and make podiums this year.

Super Pole threw up the first surprises of the day as both Moss and Adam Monea failed to make the cut, while guys in their return to outdoors – Ford Dale (1st), Lawson Bopping (3rd) and Dan Reardon (5th) – did make it through and displayed their immense speed from the outset. And that’s the thing, there are so many guys capable of going fast right now.

And MX2 is just as entertaining. Luke Clout is well in form for his title defence, his Serco Yamaha teammate Jed Beaton won on debut, and Taka Katsuya rode his Kawasaki to a second podium in as many tries from Coolum last year to Horsham.

What I think we will see on more than one occasion this year is a Yamaha sweep of the podium in the MX2, with Clout, Beaton and Jay Wilson all super-competitive on their YZ250Fs (privateer Wade Hunter wasn’t far behind in sixth either). But I’m sure that factory-supported KTM and Husqvarna riders Nathan Crawford, Caleb Ward and Luke Arbon will have something to say about that.

Interestingly, in contrast to last year there were just two two-strokes in the top 10 at Horsham, being Dylan Wills in seventh and Riley Graham in 10th (both KTMs). No doubt though that we will see Jack Simpson up amongst the front-runners in coming rounds.

Oh and by the way, Ben Townley fans out there, we can expect to see him on track again come Coolum’s fifth round and then from there, we may be fortunate enough to see him at round 10. Like all of us, it’s easy to see that BT loves the Sunshine Coast stop of the series, and for good reason.

That’s it from me for today, I’ll hand this over to Makker now for his weekly insight. Happy Easter!

It’s been a right old rollercoaster of a week in the moto community. While we’ve all been enjoying and dissecting the opening round of the 2015 MX Nationals at Horsham on Sunday, we’ve also been waiting with bated breath to see if one of the young stars of our sport, Dylan ‘Dee’ Wilson, pulls through after a horror crash in the MXD class that saw the race get red-flagged.

Dee is widely regarded as one of the nicest, happiest kids in the sport and always has time for a gas-bag, a joke and some good-natured ribbing with you. On top of that, the lad has to be one of the most stylish, naturally gifted riders to come through the ranks recently. He has this crazy-smooth riding style that makes him look deceptively slow, but his lap-times never lie about the speed he’s carrying.

After his crash – and subsequent helicopter flight to Alfred hospital in Melbourne – we’ve been hanging out for news as to how he’s progressing. According to his older brother Jay’s regular updates, Dee was in a medically-induced coma for several days, but as of yesterday (Friday) was making some really positive progress.

Jay’s daily posts have been incredible, really. Where most people would (understandably) want to shut everything and everyone out and give all his attention to his family, Jay recognises just how much of a community the motorcycling industry is, how much everyone cares and is concerned for his younger brother, and is doing his best to keep everyone informed as to Dee’s progress.

Even though it appears Dylan is out of the woods as far as his immediate condition goes, there’s still a hell of a long way to go for his recovery. To help try and fundraise to cover some of the huge costs that the Wilsons will face in the near future, they’ve had a tonne of ‘Stay Strong D-Dubb’ tees printed.

As of yesterday evening more than 250 tees had been sold as the industry throws their weight in behind the family. You can pick up your own tee for $30 before April 13 by visiting http://teespring.com/wilson10. Keep fighting, Dee, we’re right behind you and your family every step of the way.
