Five Questions Why: Errol Willis

Former MXD champ answers selection of questions beginning in 'Why'.

Errol Willis took Australian Motocross by storm in 2011, winning both the MXD (formerly Under 19s) MX Nationals and Supercross titles in a Suzuki development role.

A mixed rookie MX2 season plagued by injuries the following year saw him miss out on a factory-supported seat for 2013, however he won the Two-Stroke Cup title in the meantime to further establish himself as a top-level talent.

Broadford’s opening round of the 2014 MX Nationals saw Willis return to the pro ranks and top form a fortnight ago, going 3-10-DNF for 10th overall. MotoOnline.com.au spoke to Willis about his comeback and more.

Why didn’t we see Errol Willis on track full time last season?

No money in the sport and riders paying for rides makes it impossible for proper riders to make a salary and do what they should be able to do in this country.

Why did you select a Yamaha YZ250 for your comeback?

The YZ’s been my bike of choice because Ray Howard from Yamaha is giving me unreal help, from little to no experience with me before. He’s jumped on board to help, so it’s a credit to him.

Why was that third place finish in Broadford’s first moto so special for you?

I actually felt more comfortable there in third than I did for the rest of the day. It’s so special cos I’ve worked so hard – it’s obvious I’ve dropped a lot of weight since last year and I’m fit. For the first time in many years I’m healthy as well, so I feel like I’ve put the work in and I deserve that one.

Why were you and Dan McCoy glued together in battle all day at the opening round?

It seemed to be one of those days where we were just stuck together. He’s a rider that’s really fun to ride with, very similar to me in line choice, but also hard because it’s nearly impossible for me to pass. I had the best time I’ve had in a long time riding with him.

Why was your final moto a DNF at Broadford?

Luke Clout and I got into a battle, at the top of the hill there was a little double and we came together in the air. I seemed to cop a footpeg to the radiator and it put a little hole in it, so it dropped all the coolant and it slowly cooked the motor unfortunately.
