Fast Thoughts: Josh Cachia

Honda MX2 title threat speaks out about a variety of topics.

Apart from dropping jaws with his segment in the latest Moto 5 movie, Honda’s Josh Cachia all but dropped off the map after pulling out of the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals with a niggling wrist injury in July.

MotoOnline.com.au tracked down the colourful 21-year-old to find out what he’s been up to, how the Moto 5 gig came about, and how his wrist is coming along.

Not racing for six months…

It’s definitely been frustrating sitting back and not being able to race, but what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger. Motocross is my drug and I thrive off the adrenalin. But don’t worry, I still know how to ride – the other day I did some stand-up burnouts and I definitely haven’t lost my speed or talent. I was born to ride and it’s always come naturally to me. It’s in my blood.

Filming for Moto 5…

Filming for Moto 5 was massive and the feedback from fans, sponsors and the industry has been overwhelming. I had no idea it’d take off like that. It all came about when the filmer, Allan Hardy, sent me a couple of Facebook messages. It was one of those moments when you never know who you’re speaking to, but I try and treat everyone equally.

As soon as things developed I knew we were going to have a killer session. A week later Al, Jeff Crow and Adam Bailey were at my house and we filmed the best segment of the whole movie on a five-dollar budget.

I think it opened up people’s eyes to what I’ve got here at The Rocks. I’ve got the world’s best backyard and no-one knows where it is. While all my opponents are circulating on shit, dusty tracks I’m killing it with 20 tracks and big dune jumps all to myself.

Off-season antics…

I’ve been keeping fit with a lot of watersports like surfing, diving, kayaking and paddle-boarding. That’s been my life for the past three months. I hardly done any riding as I want to keep my wrist safe for the nationals and getting back on the bike early and pushing it isn’t worth it.

I can’t tell you when I’ll be back on the bike. At the end of the day I’m paid well and I’m not going to jeopardise that by coming back any earlier than I need to, and people are kidding themselves if they think they can make me.

I do all my own physio on my wrist. I’ve lived with a fulltime personal trainer and have been to 25 or more physios, so you pick up what they tell you to do. You don’t have to pay someone to tell you the same shit every time. If you struggle to remember, take a notepad and a pen and write it all down!

Reedy’s Anaheim 2 win…

Man, it was absolutely killer. I watched it live and it brought me back to the days when he was dominating on the Yamaha. I loved watching a true-blue animal Aussie dude giving it to the Americans. That track was rough and hard pack, which suited Reedy perfectly. He was on fire and I hope it’s the start of a new era of Chad Reed, but, if I’m going to be honest, I don’t think it will be.

Getting inked…

I’ve always got plans to get more tats. Pretty much from my chest down is black now, so you could say I’ve got my fair share. The next stage is to finish off my chest and get like a wifebeater of tats, so there’s nothing on my arms.

I like to keep the arms clean so I can look clean and classy when I need to… but if someone wanted to have a go and ripped my shift off, they’d think ‘oh f**k, he’s not the baby kid he looks like!’ I get tattoos for me and all the shit I’ve been through. I get them because I deserve them and not because I want to look fancy.
