Bay of Plenty Honda’s Cody Cooper won the opening round of the New Zealand Supercross Championship on Sunday in Timaru.

Cooper won all three Open class finals to take the overall victory from Australians Matt Haworth (Altherm JCR Yamaha) and Sam Duncanson (Honda).

Completing the top five was another Australian in Nick Sutherland aboard a Honda, as well as Justin McDonald (Honda).

In the Lites class it was Suzuki rider Rhys Carter who claimed the overall, just one point ahead of Queenslander Jay Wilson (Altherm JCR Yamaha) and Micah McGoldrick (Honda).

Carter won the first final before Wilson bounced back to score consecutive victories in the second and third outings.
