Motorex KTM’s Daniel McCoy continues to knock on the door of a maiden Terex Australian Supercross Championship podium aboard the 450 SX-F, with just one round remaining in the 2013 season.

McCoy was a surprise package 12 months ago on his way to second in the SX-Open series, landing on the podium at three out of the four rounds with CDR Yamaha.

This year however has been a more challenging one for the 29-year-old, yet to stand on the podium despite displaying front-running speed at times during the opening five rounds.

Last weekend at Phillip Island was a frustrating one for McCoy, remounting from a heavy first turn fall to claim seventh on Saturday, before finishing just shy of the podium with fourth on Sunday.

The result matched McCoy’s season-best of fourth, also attained at Mount Gambier the week prior to Phillip Island.

“Yesterday there were plenty of crashes, off the start something happened with Matt [Moss], who came over and hit me and I had a big cartwheel,” McCoy explained. “The bike was all twisted up, but I kicked the front wheel straight and rode the best I could to get back to seventh.

“Today I had a swollen hand and a fat arm and the hardest part was hanging on in the whoops. Like everyone I had wheel-spin and didn’t get the start I wanted.

“I got back up to fourth and tried everything I could to move in on [Sam] Martin, but I couldn’t get close enough. Fourth is good points, but it’s frustrating to be so close to the podium and not get there when you put so preparation in, and these tracks are not allowing for good racing and just limiting what we can do.

“With one round left I’m going for it, there’s nothing else I can do – I want to finish off strong. I’m disappointed with how things have gone for me but I feel like I’m riding okay, I just need to put myself in a better position.”

McCoy sits in sixth with one round remaining at Toowoomba on 16 November, 22 points behind new series leader Josh Hill.
